Welfare cases dip 0.2%

The overall Comprehensive Social Security Assistance caseload dropped by 459 cases to 199,941 in January, down 0.2% from December last year, the Social Welfare Department announced today.   The total number of recipients was 273,349.   Low-earnings cases registered a month-to-month reduction of 0.8% to 1,568. Unemployment cases fell 0.6% to 17,075.   Single parent cases dropped 0.5% to 20,385. Old age cases dipped 0.3% to 112,032.   Meanwhile, ill-health cases increased 0.3% to 27,817, and permanent disability cases remained steady at 17,164. http://dlvr.it/T32R7Z

Health chief meets GD delegation

Secretary for Health Prof Lo Chung-mau met a delegation led by Guangdong Provincial Medical Products Administration (GDMPA) General Director Jiang Xiaodong today, with both sides agreeing to further deepen collaboration in relevant areas.    Prof Lo said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government expressed its sincere gratitude to the GDMPA for its staunch support for Hong Kong in the past, including the implementation of the initiatives of, among others, the measure of using Hong Kong registered drugs and medical devices used in Hong Kong public hospitals in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and streamlining of the approval procedures for Hong Kong registered traditional proprietary Chinese medicines (pCms) for external use to be registered and sold in the Mainland.   The Government and the GDMPA agreed at the meeting to further deepen collaboration on the regulation of Chinese medicines (CM), the formulation of Greater Bay Area Chinese medicine standards, cross-boundary production of Hong Kong pCms as well as registration and sale of Hong Kong-registered pCms in the Mainland.   They also agreed to collaborate on the regulation of drugs and medical devices, and the measure of using Hong Kong registered drugs and medical devices used in Hong Kong public hospitals in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and clinical trials.   Prof Lo said both parties will maintain close liaison, including convening regular meetings, with a view to taking forward the various initiatives and following up on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Drugs & Medical Devices Monitoring & Co-operation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area which was signed after the Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation Joint Conference last week.   The delegation then had an in-depth discussion with Director of Health Dr Ronald Lam and other representatives from the Department of Health (DH). The delegation was briefed by DH representatives on the regulation and development of Chinese and western medicines as well as medical devices in Hong Kong.   The GDMPA delegation arrived in Hong Kong yesterday for a three-day visit. They called on the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute (GCMTI) where they learnt about its CM drug testing and research work through touring the facilities, including various laboratories and the Chinese Medicines Herbarium. The delegation will also meet the CM sector and visit the facilities of two pCm manufacturers and one western medicine manufacturer.
